Our goal as International Art Group of Rogers Park is, to improve our art through lively and progressive dialog, critical feedback and through a firsthand chance to experience each other's language, culture and philosophy through art.

What We Do

We  meet once a month at the United Church of Rogers Park to share new works in visual art, dance, poetry, mime and multi-media performance art.

Each work is discussed by the group  in terms of technique, quality of expression in broad cultural and social implications.

We have produced many performance events, exhibitions and a monthly forum in Rogers Park, beginning with the "1st Global Art/Performance May 8. 2004".

In the year of 2005, our group performed and showed  work, as International Art Salon, the title of the event was CHIMERA.

On August 26 and 27, 2005 the dancers of the the group Ching Yin, Shanti Kumari Johnson, Claudia Finn, Kathryn Gauthiers and Marianna Buchwald performed the mask performance " The Lying Leopard" at the Bucktown Festival.

In February of this year 2007, the group performed multi media and dance pieces at the Peter Jones Gallery as part of Kaffeine, an exhibition curated by Alan Emerson Hicks, who recently had another exhibition at Peter Jones: "The Crazy 8".

Sandra Simonson featured her paintings " Something Old, Something New" this spring  at Wine Cellar Restaurant at Broadway,Chicago.

Deirdre Fox was part of  several exhibitions like Cool Globes and an open studio at State Street.

Marianna Buchwald gives educational tours once a month at the MCA of current exhibitions, to increase an understanding of current trends in contemporary and modern art. She also conducts Movement Theater and Mask workshops for children and adults.

We feel  it is important for artists to look at their own and other's work through the lenses of different cultures. It is also exciting to see the range of our styles of moving, painting and speaking,  as we are exposed to the art forms of many countries.

We are a group of diverse human beings who accidentally came together  because of our interest in the arts. Some of us have been trained in theatre, dance, or painting since childhood, others found their way into the arts in later years.

The geographic worlds we come from are as diverse as our art backgrounds. We have come to Chicago from all parts of the world. We are fourth and first generation Americans, German, Chinese, Mexican, Japanes, black. white and various tones of brown. We are young and quite old, all communicating with energy on our common interests and values, integrating individual thoughts into a complex of group ideas.

Our critiques of each other's works are done with consideration and respect but without fear of taking risks. We share ideas generously, applaud and appraise and recommend.
