Claudia Finn writes about some of the members:Ching Yin and Shanti Kumari -Johnson:
“26 yards of fabric stretched between China and Mexico binding two women together.
Two lines creep out of vastly different background, across space and through time to
find themselves entangled in each other’s dreams, joys, sorrows- and sharing a single passion: to dance.
Ching and Shanti are members of the International Art group of Rogers Park, two of the many people from all over the world, who have used the forum to reveal their thoughts and experiences, and to develop a deeper understanding of other cultures through sharing their art. Ching’s feet trace intricate patterns on the floor, her ink brush dances the delicate strokes of Chinese character on rolled out rice paper.
Hillary’s pen, tip as fine as a beading needle, traces the fragile forms of women, transforming into winged creatures of men with cloven hooves of delicate leaves, bubbles, glistening spider webs, and bridges spanning vast expanses of gleaming water
to a shore so distant as to be almost invisible.
Marianna’s canvasses laugh, cups and figurines dance together, figures and faces appear and disappear in halos of gyrating colors. In front of these large backdrops, Marianna’s body echoes the sweep of her brushstrokes, her rich voice submerging the audience in a cascade of German and English poetry, that explains, wraps around and bounces off the painted images like a playful child. Often other dancers spring in and out of Marianna’s performances, wearing the giant animal masks her father makes for the festivals in Hannover,Germany. “
Marianna Buchwald, Hillary Jirka and Wencke Braaten of the International art Group taught master classes and engaged in exciting art activity and events.
